Energy SavingsSEER (cooling) Cooling efficiency for air conditioners and heat pumps is indicated by a SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) rating, which tells you how efficiently a unit uses electricity. The higher the number, the greater the efficiency. The typical SEER rating of units manufactured prior to 1992 is about 6.0. As of 2006, all newly manufactured systems will have to be a minimum of 13 SEER. Make sure the unit is properly sized and installed to ensure maximum comfort and efficiency. Contractors should be well trained in the proper installation of air-source heat pumps and central air conditioners. Incorrectly installed duct work can dramatically reduce efficiency as well
